Why DO You Travel?

People ask me all of the time why I like to travel so much. There are probably many answers to that question.  Of course I like to see new things.  There are so many truly marvelous things in this world to see.  And I love to meet new people.  Those would be the answers most people expect and they were the ones that first came to my mind when the question was posed to me.  But in truth, most of those things could be done from the comfort of my own home.  Certainly there are plenty of new things to see within a day’s drive of my own bedroom.  I could try a new food near home every weekend.  There has to be more to it than that.

Then I realized the real reason I love to travel is that it takes me out of the busy-ness of my daily life.  Even though we’ve made a conscious effort as parents to make sure our kids aren’t over scheduled and that our life is not defined by the activities of our kids, the truth of the matter is, life at home is busy.  Aside from school activities, there are family gatherings, meetings for coffee, committees to chair and volunteer commitments to uphold.

When we travel, life is just us.  Sometimes that us is our whole family, sometimes it is just my husband and I.  Occasionally we have something major we want to do or see, but most of the time, it is just me and people I love spending quality time together.

Often times I even work while we travel.  It is one of the things I love about being an AssistU Virtual Assistant.  But in the end, when we travel, it is quiet.  Is it relaxed and the pace is slower.  I can choose to work in the shadow of a mountain range or beside a lapping lake; and when my work is over for the day, travel dictates that I pack up my work and put it away.

In the next few weeks, I’m going to do a series on choosing the right type of travel vehicle for your family (and I realize that for some of you, the right type of travel involves an airplane and hotel).  But before I get started, it is important for you to think about why you travel…  Is it to spend time with your family?  To see new and exciting things, meet new people?  Try new foods?

Why DO you travel?

Tracie is an Assist U Virtual Assistant who loves that she can take her business along on family road trips. Traveling in Lewis, her trusty Ford Flex, Tracie works while her husband Bret drives and three teenage children experience America as it should be - from the backseat. Along with their giant poodle, the family takes extended trips pulling Clark, their short, comfy travel trailer.
